It's summertime and that means it's time to show off your grille. We are talking truck grilles here!
Grilles are a great upgrade to show off your style because they can allow you use an off the shelf version or even go for a custom look that fits your truck. It also gives a great first impression when rolling around town that people will remember about you and your rig.
Not only do grilles reflect your personal style, they allow maximum air flow to the radiator and intercooler. More air to your radiator makes your engine run cooler, especially on those hot summer days when you're towing that heavy trailer it will keep your engine temperature in check. The intercooler takes air from the turbo charger which takes ambient air and compresses it and then
sends this compressed air to your engine which is referred as boost pressure.
Before this compressed air reaches the engine it needs to be cooled because when you compress the air it creates heat. The job of your intercooler is to take this compressed and heated air and cool it down so that your engine can make more power. The other benefit of a colder intercooler temperature is that it will also lower your EGT's at the same time.
There are different kinds of grilles to choose from. Some are plastic, but most are aluminum or stainless steel that is then powder coated, polished, or chrome plated. Let's break down the styles.
Bar grilles are some of the most popular on trucks. Just as the name implies, they are metal bar lines that run either horizontal or vertical. These can be complete replacement grilles or you can get inserts that fill in over your current grille openings.
This type of grille is made with thin metal bars that criss-cross in a small pattern. This gives off a sturdy and clean look.
Punch grilles have a pattern of small shapes punched through a single metal sheet. This too gives a sharp and classy look.
LED grilles are the most eye catching as it brings added light to the road. It can be a bar, mesh, or punch look with an LED light bar added.
